Withdrawal of 50 and 200 hryvnias from circulation - which banknotes will soon disappear from your hands

The National Bank of Ukraine will begin the process of gradually replacing 50 and 200 hryvnia banknotes issued between 2003 and 2007 on November 1, 2024.

According to the National Bank, these banknotes will be gradually withdrawn from circulation and replaced with more modern versions of the 2014 model and later years of issue. This is stated in the NBU statement.

Replacing banknotes with new ones: details

According to the regulator, the replacement process does not require any action on the part of citizens - old banknotes remain valid means of payment and can be used without restrictions.

However, when they reach banks, they will not issue them back into circulation. Instead, these banknotes will be transferred to the National Bank for further disposal.

The main goal of this step is to improve the quality of cash in circulation by gradually replacing old banknotes with more secure ones.

This process is part of the overall strategy to optimize cash circulation, which the National Bank has been implementing since 2020, when the replacement of banknotes with a denomination of 1 and 2 hryvnias began. In 2023, the replacements affected the denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 100 hryvnias, and in August 2024 - 500 hryvnias.

According to the National Bank, the process of withdrawing banknotes will not create any inconvenience for citizens or retail chains, as it will be carried out gradually.

So Ukrainians will be able to continue using old banknotes until they are replaced with more modern analogues.
